Permission to Breathe
Cut up texts from archiving guidelines on accessioning and deaccessioning objects. Photocopier collage. Found objects and wooden drawers. Ribbon.
Permission to Breathe looks at the bureaucracy and hierarchy of the archive – what gets collected, how things are described, and who gets to see them. Exploring ideas around keeping and protecting objects, personal history, how our bodies react to the things we collect and using the language of archives to think about other kinds of disposal and the power involved. Inspired by Paulo Bruscky and his use of found materials and a photocopier to make political artworks.
